What happened to Distro Beats?

Updated over a month ago

We used to offer free licenses for releasing songs through Chat Distro if they were recorded over beats marked as "Distro Eligible." But after a lot of feedback from producers, we realized this model wasn’t sustainable:

  • Some producers weren’t aware they had opted into distro.

  • Others felt they weren’t being fairly compensated.

  • Without a working licensing model, producers began pulling their beats or restricting use.

To fix this, we’ve removed free distro licensing. Going forward, if you want to release a song on streaming platforms, you’ll need to buy a license for the beat you used.

You Can Still Record Over Any Beat for Free

Nothing is changing about how you use beats inside the app.

  • You can record over any beat for free on Rapchat.

  • You can share those songs to your socials, with friends, or on platforms where you’re not monetizing.

  • You only need to buy a license if you want to release your song on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, etc.

So keep creating and sharing — you’re still free to collaborate and build your sound in the app as always.

How to Buy a License for Distro

If you’re ready to release through Chat Distro, here’s how to license your beat:

1. Look for the Producer’s Purchase Link

  • On the beat’s page, tap “Purchase Beat” or a similar link.

  • You’ll be sent to the producer’s licensing store (like BeatStars or Airbit).

  • Buy the license that matches your release plan.

2. No purchase link? DM the Producer

  • Go to the producer’s profile and send them a message.

  • Let them know you want to license their beat for distro — most are happy to help.

Example:
“Hey! I made a track over your beat in Rapchat and want to release it. What’s the best way to license it from you?”

We know this adds a step, and we’re sorry for any confusion. But this change helps:

  • Producers earn fairly from their work.

  • Artists keep access to free, non-profit beats in the app.

  • The whole community benefits from a stronger, more balanced system.
